Ankorya is a dog-friendly luxury off-grid cliff chalet perched above the sandy beaches of Whitsand Bay on Cornwall’s south coast.

​

Fully solar-powered and deeply private, Ankorya combines the romance of a remote coastal hideaway with the comforts of a beautifully designed home: panoramic sea views, fast Starlink WiFi, air conditioning powered entirely by solar panels and batteries, a cosy wood burner, Danish-inspired mid-century interiors, and direct access onto the South West Coast Path.

 

But what makes Ankorya truly special is not simply its sea views and eco-conscious CV. It is its stories.

Carved into the cliffside in the 1930s by a family who raised five children here, Ankorya began life as a simple tea hut. Every building material had to be carried down the cliff by hand. Nearly a century later, it has become one of Whitsand Bay’s most private and romantic coastal retreats.

 

Ankorya is not for everyone, and that’s the point.

Guests reach the chalet on foot via a steep 4–8 minute walk from the nearest road. The reward is rare privacy: no close neighbours, no passing cars, only sea, sky, stars, salt air and the sound of waves below.

The story of Ankorya

 

Ankorya sits high above Whitsand Bay's four-miles of beaches, directly above the still-visible shipwreck of the Chancellor below. Inside, some of the chalet’s walls are built with timber scavenged from the wreck of the Kodima, which ran aground on Whitsand Bay in 2002. These layers of local Cornish history are part of what gives Ankorya its atmosphere: the feeling of a place shaped by weather, resourcefulness, shipwrecks, privacy and the Cornish coast.

The plot itself was originally carved into the cliffside around the 1930s. The family who created it raised five children here, carrying materials down the steep path on their backs. What began as a tiny tea hut became a resourceful family's home, and eventually a rare off-grid retreat.

​

Today, Ankorya has been carefully updated for modern comfort while preserving the sense of adventure, privacy and place that makes it so unusual and special.

About the owners

 

We are Roxy and Phil, two Americans from Colorado who have been living and exploring aboard a sailing boat since for nearly a decade. 

 

In 2020, we sailed across the North Atlantic Ocean from Cape Cod, Massachusetts aboard our 47ft monohull sloop, Sonder. After arriving in the UK, we spent the next year sailing and anchoring along the south coast of England, where we fell completely in love with Cornwall.

In 2022, we stumbled backwards into the opportunity to purchase a rustic off-grid cliff chalet above Whitsand Bay. We saw it as a place to slow down, be grounded, and reconnect with land whenever we were not aboard the boat.

​

We named it Ankorya, a Cornish verb meaning “to anchor.”

 

Since then, we have refurbished the interior and gardens ourselves, building an off-grid power system that runs entirely from solar panels and lithium batteries — much like our sailing boat.

​

When we are away sailing, we are delighted to share Ankorya with adventurous guests who understand the magic of remote places, wild coastlines and a little bit of effort in exchange for something unforgettable.
